On Memorial Day, we drove about an hour south from Bloomington to go to French Lick, Indiana. The name of this place is special because there used to be a French trading post and salt lick (a place where animals lick from minerals to obtain essential nutrients). Carthell and Peggy thought it would be very cool to see the architecture of the West Baden Hotel. Originally, it used to be a monastery; for some time, the Moorish people built towers here. But in 19th century, a man named Dr. Bowles turned this place into a hotel. This hotel has a spa, casino, golf courses and other recreational facilities. The interior design and the garden reminded me of Versailles, very luxurious and fancy. My friends and I were amazed as we walked around the place. We wondered how rich one has to be to come here for a short vacation…
The garden on the barn now has fresh lettuce, squash and tomatoes. We found cute tiny apples on the nearby trees! We also went to see bluebird’s nests, only to find that all the baby birds already left their nests, and were looking for food with their mother near the old sycamore tree. The mother bird was very smart, she built a nest with layers of grasses and straws, and she purposely picked a high location, hence the babies weren’t attacked by the neighbor’s cat. I went to have brunch with my friend, and then we went to shopping at College Mall.
朋友決定在我去芬蘭之前帶我去印第安納州的納什維爾鎮。許多人可能不知道，印第安納州是一位美國著名印象派畫家的出生地。這位藝術家的名字是T. C. Steele。
My friends decided to take me to Nashville Indiana, because they thought I should visit this place before I fly to Finland. Many people might not know that Indiana is the birthplace of a famous American impressionist artist. The name of this artist is T. C. Steele. He was a hoosier, educated in Germany, extremely talented in portrait and landscape painting. Interestingly, his eldest son is called Rembrandt. We visited his original studio (the red barn building) and the home he shared with his second wife Selma. These pictures of lovely flowers were taken in the garden, the tourguide told us Selma loved to plant flowers and the couple named their house “the House of Singing Winds”. After we visited the house, we headed to the artist colony in Nashville. It’s a small town with many strange decorations and artistic things. Here one can find gems, paintings, sculptures and woodwork, I even bought some souvenirs to bring to Finland. We also tried the authentic food, including the famous fried biscuits. Later, we were tired of going from shop to shop, we went to Brown County Park to see green forest on a hill.
The barn always has many stories. Somewhere far away, a small bird was ready to fly. It was not afraid of snow or rain, it would not stop until it comes home… Mood clouds in the sky spent the day taking long walks and thinking. Flowers in the garden loved noisy and happy scenes, they chatted with bees and played games with other small bugs. Old granny’s peony finally smiled. Robin mama brought food to its babies, they fought over food , and wanted more when they finished.
